Philantrophy

Philanthropy is a critical part of a democratic society. It is different than charity, which focuses on eliminating the suffering caused by social problems, while philanthropy focuses on the elimination of social problems. It supports projects and endeavors from which we all benefit, such as libraries, museums and scientific research; and it also supports efforts that may be too unpopular or controversial to gain the widespread support of the general public or the government.

CORO India

Over the last three decades, CORO has developed a community-based approach?? to facilitating change from within India’s most marginalised and oppressed.

CORO was formed with the aim of propagating adult literacy in the slums of Mumbai. Literacy was seen as a tool to mobilise marginalised people to solve their own issues. CORO was established primarily by privileged individuals (eg upper caste, well-educated people from different social organisations) who came from outside the community. Over the last 25 years it has evolved into a grassroots-owned organisation led, shaped and managed predominantly by Scheduled Caste and Muslim women and men.

17000 ft Foundation

17000 ft Foundation works to improve lives of the people of remote, high altitude mountainous villages of Ladakh, in areas that lie isolated and ignored for centuries due to problems of harsh terrain. By strengthening existing systems and providing opportunities for growth within these hamlets, 17000 ft aims to stem the desperate exodus of these indigenous communities to faraway cities.

Our programs focus on improving education in Govt. Schools, creating livelihood opportunities, and generating exposure through interactions with the outside world. Today, our work spans the entire 65,000 sq. km. of Ladakh, and we aim to impact other similarly remote, inaccessible regions.
